Carreño Municipality

Carreño Municipality is one of Asturias’ coastal regions with the strongest maritime tradition, constantly facing and breathing the sea. A land of ocean-bound sailors that even inspired Clarín in his masterpiece La Regenta, Carreño’s past and present come alive in its gestures, places, festivals, and celebrations. Food lovers can’t miss the Sardine Festival or its Michelin-starred cuisine, while those eager to immerse themselves in local traditions should experience Holy Week or the Cristo Festival, one of the most popular pilgrimages in all of Asturias. But Carreño is much more than that—it is truly rural and proudly showcases Asturias’ colorful granaries (paneras), medieval towers like the one in Prendes, its many beaches and viewpoints, and its historic canning tradition, celebrated at the Canning Museum in the capital, Candás. Art also thrives here, with an open-air maritime painting museum and the Antón Sculpture Museum. On top of all this, Candás is a town of Olympians, where sports like kayaking are almost a religion, having placed Asturian and Spanish sport at the very top of its history.”
